A fire broke out in garbage dumped at an abandoned ECL colliery in the Neughusik area of Ushagram under Asansol South police station on Tuesday, triggering panic in the locality after thick smoke was seen rising from the site.

On receiving information, fire brigade engines rushed to the spot and began firefighting operations. However, the fire had not been fully brought under control till the time of filing this report. No casualties have been reported.
An ECL security guard said the colliery has been closed for a long time. After the old incline and boundary were damaged, garbage was being dumped there, and the fire broke out in that waste. He added that there is no coal on the surface, though it is believed that coal may exist several layers underground.
A local resident said sudden flames were noticed at the site, following which local people and the councillor informed ECL authorities and the fire brigade. While the intensity of the fire has reduced, it is yet to be completely controlled. ECL officials are present at the spot and the situation is being monitored.
